CHAPTER SIX

IT WAS several hours before Jonas finally drew the car up before the apartment block in which Aimi lived. Holiday traffic had clogged the roads, turning a simple journey into a nightmare. Aimi felt like a limp rag, for the temperature in the city was higher than the countryside. She knew her apartment was going to feel like an oven, and wasn’t looking forward to entering it after the better part of four days.

All through the remaining part of the journey she had been plagued by her memories, reliving that awful time over and over again in her mind. For some years she had been haunted by nightmares, but that had slowly faded, so that she rarely had one now. It wouldn’t surprise her, though, if she had one tonight.

When Jonas switched off the engine the sudden silence was deafening. She still did not know what she was going to do. She knew that she ought to walk away, and yet no sooner had the thought entered her head than a voice cried out inside her, No, I’m not ready to give this up! I don’t want to be put back in the cold and the dark yet! I want to live! I want to have this!

Staggered by the strength of the feeling, Aimi felt dazed, but at the same time she knew she had just been given her answer. The resurgent Aimi had won, drowning out the small voice of her conscience. She simply could not walk away from this right now. She had tried, but it was just too strong to fight. As soon as she accepted that, her inner battle came to an end. Like magic, she could sense the restraints which had held her back falling away, and deep inside it felt as if a small bird had woken from a long sleep and was flapping its wings as it prepared to fly free.

Almost light-headed, she turned to Jonas with a cool smile that hid a certain amount of inner turmoil. Even though she knew the path she was going to take, she felt nervous. She knew she was stepping out on a limb that was far from secure. It wouldn’t take much to knock it down. ‘Thank you for bringing me home. It must have been out of your way,’ she said politely.

One eyebrow rose at her tone, and his lips twitched momentarily. ‘I gave Nick my word that I would get you home safely,’ he returned ironically and, because her anxiety level was heightened, that answer stung.

‘Yes, well, you’ve done that,’ she responded, gathering up the notes she had barely looked at for hours and slipping them into her bag. ‘I’ll be sure to tell him you did a marvellous job.’ She couldn’t stop herself giving him the pithy reply because it dawned on her that she didn’t know how to tell him she had changed her mind.

Fortunately it bounced off Jonas the way everything else she had ever said had done. ‘OK, let’s get you inside,’ he declared, opening the door and climbing out.
